Hyman Berger was born on June 5, 1907 in New York, NY, at 60 Hester St. At an early age, his family moved to Mobile, Alabama. On February 12, 1928, he married Sally Gerhardt in Mobile, Alabama. Sally was born on November 7, 1908, in Camden, Alabama, the youngest of nine children of Marcus and Esther Gerhardt.

Hymie and Sally lived the majority of their lives in Mobile, Alabama. Hymie was a merchant in Mobile, for many years the owner of Berger Novelty Co., and later in the pawn shop business. Hymie was also a very active Shriner, and, in 1962, was Potentate of the Abba Temple in Mobile.

The last few years of their lives were spent in Atlanta, Georgia, where they lived in the Jewish Tower apartments. For a few months before he died, Hymie was in the Jewish Home, adjoining the Jewish Towers.

Hymie died on July 18, 1990. Sally died on November 5, 1992. They are both buried in Ahavas Chesed Cemetery in Mobile, Alabama.
